This work outwardly takes the form of “NFT Ambient Music” sold on OpenSea, the world’s largest NFT marketplace on the web space. This music consists of a chord made up of five sounds that slowly decay over 60 seconds.
However, instead of using common recording devices like HDDs or SSDs as a means of data storage, this NFT art utilizes “acoustic delay line memory,” a recording technology actually used during the dawn of computers in the 1950s. It is stored within the gallery space as sound waves. In essence, the gallery itself acts as the data storage for this NFT art. Due to the nature of the data being stored as sound waves, it is extremely fragile to external sound stimuli. If a viewer visits the gallery and makes even the slightest noise, the NFT data of the work will be destroyed.
While blockchain technology guarantees the “ownership” of a work, it does not guarantee the “uniqueness” of the work. The “delay memory device” manipulates the consensus surrounding the blockchain, challenging the concept of the “uniqueness” of the work.
