“The Process in Question/The Bridge of Reversible Destiny” was conceived as a bridge over the river flowing through the city of Épinal in France. However, the project did not come to fruition. This work forms the foundation of Shusaku Arakawa and Madeline Gins’ core concept “Reversible Destiny,” and its essence is carried on in later works such as “Yoro Reversible Destiny Park” (1995) and “Mitaka Reversible Destiny Apartments” (2005).
The bridge consists of a chain of 21 devices, each named things like “Bodily Inference of Light” and “Process of Communal Gaze,” all designed to compel specific physical actions. The VR work was created based on a 13-meter-long model, production notes from that time, and other “Reversible Destiny” works. Had it been realized, the bridge would have been 140 meters long; however, 50 meters of it have been recreated in a virtual space. This allows for the experience of crossing the complexly structured bridge.
