SNOWCRASH

At face value, this piece is represented as an “NFT Ambient Music” sold on opensea, the world’s largest NFT marketplace on the web. This music consists of a chord made up of five sounds that gradually diminish over a 60-second duration. (opensea)

However, the distinctive feature of this NFT art is not its digital presentation but its storage medium. Instead of using conventional storage devices like HDDs or SSDs, this NFT employs a recording technology from the dawn of computing in the 1950s known as “Acoustic Delay Line Memory.” This means the gallery space itself serves as the data storage for this NFT art piece. Due to the nature of data being stored as sound waves, it becomes extremely fragile against external acoustic disturbances. Thus, if a visitor makes any sound while in the gallery, it risks damaging the NFT data.

While blockchain technology ensures the “ownership” of the artwork, it doesn’t guarantee the “uniqueness” of the piece. The “Delay Memory Device” manipulates the consensus surrounding the blockchain, challenging and dissecting the concept of “uniqueness.”
