Group and Alternative Machine’s collaborative project, “Tuning for Sanctuaries,” will be showcased at the Ginza Sony Park mini. The exhibit will be available from May 2nd to May 30th, 2023.

Tuning for Sanctuaries

“Can spaces designed for non-humans coexist with those intended for humans?

The architectural collective, Group, and the research team, Alternative Machine, are currently delving into research about environments where animals, plants, and humans can coexist. As part of their initiatives, they are designing a ‘sound garden’ specifically for animals and plants in houses slated for completion this year. Furthermore, they plan to craft a garden that preserves the natural state of Yumeshima, the site for the upcoming Osaka-Kansai Expo in 2025.

In this exhibition, which serves as a prototype, the focus is on ‘sound,’ one of the many elements that shape space. Engaging in dialogues with artists who will perform during the exhibition period, they undertake the tuning process for the forthcoming sanctuaries. How will the sound, tuned specifically for non-humans, function in this artificial subterranean environment? The prototype process will be exhibited along with recorded dialogues that took place in this setting.”
