We are thrilled to announce the exhibition of ALTERNATIVE MACHINE’s latest work, “The View From Nowhere,” at the “ICC Annual 2022: Life-likeness.” The art piece offers an immersive experience within an anechoic chamber, equipped with a 9.1-channel surround sound system and a head-mounted display.

“The View From Nowhere” is an installation that creates a non-existent world within an anechoic chamber using a head-mounted display (HMD) and a 9.1-channel surround sound system. Viewers seamlessly transition from the real world into a surreal alternate dimension. The title of this piece is inspired by philosopher Thomas Nagel’s 1986 publication, “The View from Nowhere.” Through VR and the generated acoustic environment, it challenges how participants can attain a view that harmonizes both subjective and objective perspectives. The artwork disrupts the viewer’s cultivated relationship between perception and motion throughout their life, as well as their relationship between memory and the present moment. This induces a perspective that is neither first-person nor third-person. The sounds and their movements heard throughout the piece are predominantly generated in real-time. For instance, the landscape viewed by the participant is converted into sound, or the flight of an invisible void in the VR space (simulating the complex movements of numerous swarms) generates wave-like noises, creating a dynamic virtual space that differs with each experience."
